ESG Initiative
So what is ESG and why does it matter?
ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance. It’s a fancy way of saying:
- We care about the environment
- We care about people
- We run a tight ship
- We support schools and charitable organisations that are making a difference in the lives of our members and their families.
And we don’t just talk the talk—we walk the walk.
The Three Pillars of ESG (In Plain English)
Environmental – Protecting the Planet
We’re working hard to shrink our carbon footprint without shrinking our service. From paperless banking to supporting greener homes, we’re making sustainable choices that benefit our members and the world they live in.
Social – Putting People First
This one’s close to our heart. We give back to our community through grants, bursaries, AED donations, and more. It’s not just about banking—it’s about building stronger, safer, and smarter communities.
Governance – Trust Through Transparency
We run things properly—simple as. Our members own us, and everything we do is in their best interest. No dodgy dealings, no outside shareholders. Just local people making decisions for local people.
What we're doing for ESG
Our Environmental Impact
Paperless Banking: Go green with our online and mobile services, which cuts down on unnecessary paper.
Online AGMs: Less commuting = lower emissions (and you can join in your slippers and PJs!).
Digital Invites & Brochures: Where possible, we opt to send notifications out digitally. We’ve saved about 1.87 tonnes of paper annually—that’s around 8-9 trees each year 🌳🌳🌳.
Green Loans: Need to fund your solar panels, EV, hybrid, or home retrofit? We’ve got low-rate loans to help you go green.
We’ve recently partnered with GreenFeet, a climate-focused platform that helps us easily track, manage, and reduce our carbon emissions. From commuting and travel to building energy use, GreenFeet lets us upload and analyse data in CO2e format. With monthly and yearly tracking, we can measure progress and stay aligned with our ESG goals—making greener choices for our community and our planet.
Our Social Impact
We’re proud to be more than just a credit union—we’re a community hub.
Our Community Fund: We offer annual grants to local heroes — from GAA clubs to knitting groups
Our local AED Programme: 15 defibrillators (and counting) with over €30,000+ invested in lifesaving equipment and training
Our Student Bursary: €160,000+ given to local students to help with third-level education
Zero-Fee Community & Club Accounts: Tailored for community groups, schools, and local clubs
We’re always looking for ways to give back because strong communities make for strong members.
Access to Financial Services
Our social impact also extends to access to Financial Services to ensure no one is left behind. Unlike some banks, we’re not shutting the doors or hiding behind apps. We keep our branches open and accessible, while still offering digital services for those who prefer the online route.
Here’s how we stayed connected in 2024:
Governance & Ethics – Solid Foundations for a Strong Future
We don’t do suits and skyscrapers—but we do take governance seriously.
Member-Driven and Transparent
- Our Board is made up of volunteer members—no outside interests. No hidden agendas.
- We’re fully compliant, regularly audited (internally and externally), and always accountable.
- Eisner Amper: External auditors
- RBK: Internal audits
- ViClarity: Compliance tech to keep us in check
Croí Laighean Credit Union is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI). A key function of the CBI is to ensure that credit unions safeguard the funds of their members. The CBI also aims to maintain the overall financial health and stability of the credit union sector
Risk Management, With Heart
- Our ESG strategy includes environmental and social risks—because they matter.
- We have a full-time Risk Officer, Compliance Manager, and DPO.
- We adhere to a strict Code of Ethics.
- All decisions are made through a community-first lens.
- We protect your data like it’s our own.
Minimum Competency Code
We’re building real momentum when it comes to professional development—especially in the area of Minimum Competency Code qualifications
These qualifications don’t just tick a regulatory box—they build confidence, capability, and credibility across CLCU. They ensure our teams can continue to support members with the expertise and care they deserve and allow us to continue to lead with integrity as our business evolves.
Governance isn’t red tape—it’s your peace of mind. And we’re here to keep earning your trust, every day.
In Conclusion
ESG isn’t a buzzword here. It’s built into our DNA. From the paper we don’t print, to the students we support, to the rules we follow—it’s all about doing the right thing for our members and our community.
Thanks for helping us build a brighter, greener, and fairer future.
